Dance-Pop R&B fuses R&B vocals and groove with pop-dance structure: crisp beats, big choruses, choreographic rhythm, club-ready synths, clean hooks and star performances built for video, radio and arena movement. It is less underground than club R&B and less raw than funk; the goal is high-gloss accessibility. The singer must sell both feeling and motion, usually with the body as part of the record's identity.

History

Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson set the template for R&B-grounded dance-pop in the 1980s, while Paula Abdul, New Edition, TLC, Beyonce, Rihanna, Usher, Chris Brown, Ciara and The Weeknd carried it through video choreography, pop radio and global touring. Producers from Jam & Lewis to Darkchild, The Neptunes, Timbaland and Stargate kept updating the sound. Dance-pop R&B remains a core route from Black pop innovation to global charts.
