Cyber Metal

A futurist, science-fiction-skinned strain of industrial metal heavy on synthesizers, sequencers, vocoders and trance-style electronics laid over double-kick metal riffing. Programmed or heavily triggered drums chase a slick, danceable electro pulse; guitars are clipped and processed; vocals alternate distorted black-metal rasps, robotic spoken-word and effects-drenched cleans. The aesthetic is overtly cyberpunk and cosmic - aliens, machines, space and dystopian technology - with a glossy, almost club-ready production sheen that sets it apart from the grimier industrial-metal mainline.
History
Cyber metal coalesced around the turn of the millennium when several Scandinavian black-metal acts abandoned corpse-paint for chrome and circuitry. Norway's The Kovenant led the charge: after the symphonic black metal of In Times Before the Light, they reinvented themselves on Animatronic (1999) and the explicitly sci-fi SETI (2003), both routinely filed as cyber metal. Italy's Aborym fused black metal with techno and drum machines (Kali Yuga Bizarre, Fire Walk with Us!), Finland's ...And Oceans morphed into the cyber-metal project Havoc Unit, and acts like Samael (Eternal, Reign of Light) and Mortiis-adjacent electronic projects pushed similar machine-driven futurism. Largely a European, Nuclear-Blast-and-underground phenomenon, the tag peaked in the early 2000s before its ideas dissolved into broader industrial and digital metal scenes.
