History
Cumbia cristiana emerged as Latin American Pentecostal and evangelical movements adapted the region's most popular dance rhythm for worship, spreading from Colombia and Mexico across the continent from the 1990s onward. Church-based groups — among them Agrupación Magdiel, Grupo Pazz, Grupo Arkangel and the cumbia-medley singer Franco Figueroa — built repertoires of danceable praise cumbias for services, crusades and Christian festivals. Amplified by TikTok, YouTube and streaming playlists in the 2010s–20s, cumbia gospel became a fixture of Hispanic evangelical culture, sitting alongside Christian norteño and grupera as accessible, celebratory música cristiana.
