Cowpunk combines punk rock's speed, sneer, and DIY ethos with country twang, roots-song structure, and western imagery. The sound favors distorted guitars, brisk tempos, rough-edged vocals, and the sense that somebody showed up to the honky-tonk wearing boots they found at a thrift store and opinions they found nowhere.
History
The style grew in Southern California and parallel scenes as punk and new-wave musicians leaned into country and roots influences. X, Jason & the Scorchers, Rank and File, Long Ryders, Meat Puppets, and later revival acts made cowpunk one of the key bridges from punk to alt-country and Americana.
