Country Rap merges rap delivery with country signifiers: acoustic or banjo loops, Southern rock guitar, heavy programmed drums, and lyrics about back roads, working-class pride, mudding, or rural partying. It usually leans more on hip-hop rhythm than mainstream country singing, even when choruses return to a country hook.
History
The form had precursors in Southern rap novelty and crossover experiments, but it cohered commercially around Colt Ford and the ecosystem of independent southern acts that followed him. Jason Aldean's hit version of "Dirt Road Anthem" proved the style could infiltrate major-label country, and later viral breakthroughs kept the lane alive well beyond its supposed novelty phase.
