Country Jazz is where country rhythm sections and repertory absorb jazz harmony, improvisation, and arrangement logic without losing twang. It usually sounds lighter on its feet than honky-tonk, more improvisational than straight western repertoire, and more rhythmically elastic overall.

History

Western swing bands were the main incubator, but country-jazz thinking persisted in guitar-centered and fiddle-centered crossover work after the first swing era. The lane explains why Bob Wills, Spade Cooley, Hank Penny, Chet Atkins, and later revival bands could sound unmistakably country while borrowing directly from jazz language.
