Country Funk

Country Funk rides syncopated bass lines, greasy drum pockets, clavinet or electric-piano shimmer, and highly physical guitar rhythm while preserving country storytelling or swampy Southern imagery. It is less polished than country-pop and looser in the hips than mainstream Nashville usually allows.

History

The style first flowered around Southern studio scenes where soul, rock, and country musicians crossed freely, then reappeared in later revival forms through artists who loved groove as much as twang. Jerry Reed and Tony Joe White are core figures, while newer acts have kept the lane alive by folding funk feel back into roots-aware country.
