Cosmic metal fuses extreme-metal foundations with vast, space-themed ambient atmosphere: shimmering walls of tremolo-picked guitar, droning synth pads and astral keyboards, programmed or distant blast/double-kick drumming, and rasped vocals dissolved deep into reverb. Tempos swing from glacial ambient drift to surging mid-fast passages, and tracks run long, building cosmic-horror dread or weightless awe through layered texture rather than riffs. Production is deliberately washed-out and cavernous, often with sci-fi samples, sequencers and electronic pulses, evoking deep space, nebulae and cosmic isolation - the atmospheric-black-metal toolkit pointed at the stars.
History
Cosmic (or 'space') metal crystallized when Switzerland's Darkspace turned second-wave black metal into suffocating outer-space ambient on 'Dark Space II' (2005) and 'Dark Space III' (2008), while Finland's Oranssi Pazuzu pushed a psychedelic, krautrock-tinged cosmic strain. The scene exploded on Bandcamp and labels like I, Voidhanger and Avantgarde: California's Mare Cognitum and the Australian axis of Midnight Odyssey and the synth-heavy duo Mesarthim made the cosmos their entire subject. Spectral Lore, Aerospace and Astral Tomb extended it. Sitting where atmospheric black metal, space rock and ambient meet, cosmic metal remains a thriving, prolific underground style centered on the bedroom-auteur model.
