Contemporary R&B-Blues blends modern studio clarity and smoother contemporary rhythm-and-blues textures with blues songwriting, guitar or organ support, and mature lead vocals. Compared with retro soul-blues, it can feel cleaner, punchier, and more crossover-aware while still leaning on blues mood and structure.
History
This lane emerged as artists began making blues-rooted records inside a post-1980s R&B production environment rather than trying to recreate 1960s or 1970s sonics exactly. Robert Cray was an especially important early model, and later singers and bandleaders kept exploring how far blues could move toward modern R&B polish without surrendering its identity.
