It ranges from solo-piano intimacy to sweeping ensemble grandeur, still consonant and calming but often brighter and more produced, aimed at adult-contemporary and wellness audiences. Vocals, when present, are wordless or in invented/sacred-sounding syllables.
History
As the classic labels matured and digital recording arrived, a new wave of melodic new age took shape around Yanni's arena-scale instrumental concerts, Enya's ongoing multi-platinum success and Narada/Real Music rosters featuring pianists like Kevin Kern and duos like 2002 (Pamela and Randy Copus). Norway's Secret Garden won Eurovision in 1995 and Karl Jenkins's Adiemus project topped classical-crossover charts, widening the palette. The style thrived through the 2000s in spa, gift and wellness retail, then migrated to streaming's relaxation and "peaceful piano" playlists, keeping the melodic new-age tradition commercially alive.
