Socially aware rock that favors empathy and moral reflection over confrontation — songs about poverty, injustice, human rights and dignity sung with earnest, melodic warmth. Sound is anthemic and clean: ringing guitars, gospel or world-music textures, big humane choruses. It persuades through compassion and storytelling rather than sloganeering or fury.
History
Grew from singer-songwriter humanism and 1980s benefit-concert culture (Live Aid, Amnesty tours). Peter Gabriel and Sting brought world-music conscience to rock; Tracy Chapman and Midnight Oil pressed civil and indigenous causes. The mode hardened into a mainstream rock conscience that still surfaces in cause-driven anthems today.
