Concept rap organizes songs or albums around a sustained idea, story, persona, or structural conceit. The music can sound almost any way; the defining trait is that the record is built to mean more as a designed totality.
History
Prince Paul's narrative ambition, Deltron 3030's futuristic world-building, Kendrick Lamar's cohesive album architecture, and Tyler, the Creator's fully authored conceptual arcs all exemplify the lane. Concept rap remains one of the clearest ways rap artists signal album-level seriousness.
