Albums conceived as unified wholes: a single narrative, theme or fictional world threaded through every track, with recurring motifs, interludes and sequencing that demands front-to-back listening. The song serves the larger story; arrangement and transitions bind the record into one statement rather than a collection of singles.

History

Pioneered by The Pretty Things' 'S.F. Sorrow' and The Who's 'Tommy' (1968-69), the rock-opera and themed-album idea migrated into ambitious pop. The Kinks built whole worlds on 'Village Green'; later, Sufjan Stevens' state albums and Janelle Monáe's android saga revived the conceptual full-length.
