The mainstream, radio-and-chart-engineered face of R&B-pop: maximum hooks, crisp uptempo or midtempo grooves, marquee guest features and gloss tuned for the widest possible audience. Vocals stay soulful but the priority is mass appeal, sticky choruses, club-and-radio playability and crossover ubiquity over experimentation or edge.
History
Hardened in the late '90s and 2000s as labels and hitmakers like Jermaine Dupri, Jam & Lewis and Stargate built R&B engineered first for the Hot 100. Mariah Carey's rap-feature pivot and Beyoncé's solo run set the commercial high-water mark; the formula kept R&B atop pop radio deep into the 2010s.
