Commercial Blues is blues shaped for wide-market success: clear hooks, big guitar tones, professional production, strong branding and songs that can work on rock radio, adult radio, television or large stages. The term is descriptive, not automatically negative. Commercial blues can be formulaic, but it can also carry blues language to audiences who would never seek out specialist blues records.

History

The modern commercial lane runs through Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, Stevie Ray Vaughan's legacy, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang, Joe Bonamassa, John Mayer and Gary Clark Jr. It grew alongside guitar media, festivals, radio formats and later streaming playlists. The tension is always the same: enough polish and scale to reach people, enough blues feel to keep the music grounded.
