The 1980s sound of US college radio: chiming, jangly guitars, melodic basslines, literate and often cryptic lyrics, and tuneful but understated vocals. Cleaner and brighter than punk, warmer than new wave, it favored ringing Rickenbacker arpeggios, tight pop structures and a thoughtful, bookish sensibility that defined the pre-alternative underground.
History
Named for the campus stations that championed it, college rock flourished in the early-to-mid 1980s as R.E.M., The Replacements and Husker Du built a national circuit outside mainstream radio. The format's bands and infrastructure became the launchpad for 1990s alternative, dissolving into it once that sound went commercial after 1991.
