History

Urban coffeehouses in the folk revival gave blues musicians and interpreters a different setting from bars, dances or electric clubs. Dave Van Ronk, John Hammond, Stefan Grossman, Chris Smither, Rory Block and others brought blues into mixed folk sets for attentive audiences. The circuit helped preserve older material while also teaching younger listeners to hear blues as songwriting, storytelling and guitar craft.
