A DJ or producer rebuilds an EXISTING pop hit for the dancefloor: the original vocal is re-recorded or chopped, pitched and stacked over a fresh four-on-the-floor of new kicks and synths. The intro stretches, the hook loops, a breakdown and drop replace verse-chorus, so a radio song plays at peak-hour. Function over song-form.
History
Grew from the 12-inch club mix and the official-remix economy, where labels commissioned dance versions for DJ play and chart eligibility. David Morales's 1993 Mariah Carey 'Dreamlover' rework, with re-sung vocals, reset the craft; Hex Hector, Almighty, Calvin Harris and Cedric Gervais made remixing pop hits a hit-making art, Gervais's 'Summertime Sadness' winning a Grammy.
