History
Haydn’s quartets established the genre’s prestige and procedures, Mozart deepened its emotional and contrapuntal range, and Beethoven pushed it toward a new degree of expressive pressure. Chamber performance in salons and smaller rooms helped shape the style’s intimacy, even as the quartet became the era’s highest test of compositional craft.
