Classical Minuet is an elegant triple-meter movement, typically moderate in tempo, with court-dance origins refined into orchestral, chamber, and keyboard form. Its sound is poised and symmetrical, often with a contrasting trio section that provides color change before the return.
History
Imported from aristocratic dance culture into instrumental genre cycles, the minuet became a standard third movement in symphonies, quartets, and sonatas before the scherzo began displacing it. In the Classical era it served both as social memory and as formal breathing space within larger multi-movement works.
