Classic swing is the canonical 1930s–1940s sound: dance-driven but musically supple, with bright brass, riffing reeds, and soloists who swing hard without breaking the social contract of the arrangement.
History
It is the textbook sound of the Swing Era and the point of reference for later revivals. Goodman, Basie, Ellington, Shaw, Miller, and Dorsey made it the shared language of American popular music before rock replaced it as mass culture’s default beat.
