Classic Disco is the canonical late-1970s dance-floor sound: steady kick drums, live rhythm sections, sweeping strings, bright horns, handclaps, and vocals that turn nightlife into liberation, romance, or survival. It is more song-based and band-driven than later house, but its extended 12-inch mixes already point toward DJ culture. The style carries the popular image of disco because its biggest records moved from underground clubs into radio, film, television, and global pop memory.

History

Classic Disco peaked when club music, record labels, and mainstream media converged around Studio 54, Saturday Night Fever, Casablanca, Salsoul, Prelude, and Philadelphia soul's dance-floor extensions. Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder made disco futuristic, Chic made it elegant and rhythmically exact, and Gloria Gaynor made it an anthem form. The backlash after 1979 was real, but the music's infrastructure survived in remix culture, club DJing, and the house and dance-pop records that followed.
