City Pop Remix is the future-funk-adjacent practice of turning Japanese city pop, boogie, disco, and 1980s studio-pop references into brighter club edits. It usually uses chopped loops, four-on-the-floor drums, sidechain bounce, anime or VHS imagery, and glossy horn, bass, or synth hooks. Compared with vaporwave, it is less slowed and alienated; compared with nu-disco, it is more explicitly tied to Japanese pop nostalgia and online remix culture.
History
City Pop Remix emerged as vaporwave listeners and future-funk producers rediscovered 1980s Japanese pop through YouTube, anime edits, and Bandcamp releases. Macross 82-99, Yung Bae, Night Tempo, Desired, Mikazuki BIGWAVE, Vantage, Tanuki, Moe Shop, Saint Pepsi, Android Apartment, and Flamingosis became reference points because they treated city pop as dance-floor material rather than only as archival nostalgia. The lane later overlapped with official city-pop reissue culture, global interest in Mariya Takeuchi's "Plastic Love," and DJ sets built around Japanese boogie and AOR.
