It sounds like night driving, neon, resort ads, high-end stereo equipment and economic-boom aspiration: smooth bass, clean guitars, bright horns, precise drums and bittersweet melodies. The style is pop, but its fantasy is adult city life rendered through immaculate arrangements and luxurious surfaces.
History
City Pop grew during Japan's late-1970s and 1980s urban boom, with artists such as Tatsuro Yamashita, Mariya Takeuchi, Anri, Taeko Ohnuki, Miki Matsubara, Toshiki Kadomatsu and Junko Ohashi shaping the core sound. It faded as mainstream trends shifted, then became globally visible again through YouTube, vinyl reissues, vaporwave, future funk and the viral afterlife of "Plastic Love." The revival reframed it as both nostalgia and modern design language.
