Cinematic minimalism uses repeating figures, slowly unfolding harmony, and immediate emotional contour to create widescreen images in the mind. Piano ostinatos, string pedals, choir halos, and restrained crescendos are common, with production often as important as orchestration.
History
Minimalist classical found a natural second home in film and screen-adjacent writing because pulse, incremental buildup, and harmonic clarity translate powerfully to montage and atmosphere; Glass, Nyman, Richter, Jóhannsson, Mansell, and later post-classical composers turned minimalist grammar into one of the dominant sound-worlds of modern cinematic feeling.
