Chutney is Indo-Caribbean party music combining Bhojpuri/Hindustani folk inheritance, Trinidadian and Guyanese creole speech, dholak, dhantal, harmonium, tassa, soca rhythm and humorous social lyrics. It is wedding music, rum-shop music, carnival music and diaspora identity music at once. Chutney-soca pushes the style toward faster carnival arrangements while keeping its Indo-Caribbean melodic and rhythmic identity.

History

Chutney grew from the music of Indian indentured communities in Trinidad, Guyana and Suriname. Sundar Popo's "Nana & Nani" helped define recorded chutney, while Drupatee Ramgoonai coined and popularized "chutney soca" with tassa-driven crossover songs. Rikki Jai, Terry Gajraj, Ravi B, KI and many others brought the form into competitions, fetes, diaspora weddings and mainstream Caribbean party culture.
