History
Christmas-themed sacred works existed throughout early modern church practice, but Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium became the defining example by joining six cantatas for the Christmas season into a coherent oratorio cycle. Handelian choruses, Lutheran chorales, French noëls, English carol traditions, 19th-century choral societies, and modern concert programming kept Christmas oratorio alive as both liturgical memory and seasonal concert ritual.
