Guitar-driven pop-rock with faith or spiritually themed lyrics: crunchy power chords, soaring melodic choruses, drum-kit drive and earnest lead vocals. Punchier and rock-leaning versus soft CCM, it ranges from alt-rock grit to radio pop-rock polish, often addressing doubt, hope and surrender in ways that crossed onto mainstream rock and pop charts.
History
Jars of Clay's Flood (1995) and dc Talk's Jesus Freak broke Christian rock into the mainstream. Switchfoot's The Beautiful Letdown (2003) sent Dare You to Move and Meant to Live to pop and alternative charts, while Relient K and Skillet carried the pop-rock and harder edges through the 2000s.
