History
Petra, formed 1972 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, pioneered the form, growing from melodic country-tinged rock into Journey-scale arena rock and the best-selling Christian band of the '80s. Built on Jesus-music roots, it spawned a full CCM industry of labels, festivals and Dove Awards, legitimizing rock instrumentation inside skeptical church culture.
