Punk and pop-punk energy paired with explicitly Christian lyrics: fast palm-muted power chords, bright melodic hooks, gang vocals, and frequent ska or hardcore crossover, but with faith, doubt, redemption, and worship in place of nihilism. Sonically indistinguishable from secular punk; the difference is message, ministry, and a clean DIY uplift.
History
Rooted in mid-'80s pioneers like California hardcore band The Crucified, it broke through in the '90s via Tooth & Nail Records. MxPx took it gold, Five Iron Frenzy fused it with ska, and Relient K carried it onto mainstream pop-punk radio, peaking commercially in the late-'90s/early-2000s Christian-rock boom.
