Chopped & Screwed is Houston rap transformed through DJ Screw's slowing, cutting, repetition and hypnotic manipulation: pitch dropped, tempo dragged, phrases repeated, beats stretched into syrupy atmosphere and vocals made heavy with time. It is not simply "slow rap." The method changes the emotional physics of a record, turning club tracks, freestyles and street stories into immersive, late-night, codeine-slow sound worlds.

History

DJ Screw developed the style in Houston through mixtapes, Screw Tapes and the Screwed Up Click, influencing artists such as Lil' Keke, Big Moe, ESG, Fat Pat, Z-Ro, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Slim Thug and UGK-adjacent Southern rap. The sound became central to Houston identity and later influenced cloud rap, chopped-not-slopped, vaporwave-adjacent slowing and internet slowed/reverb edits. Its legacy is a whole alternate way to hear time in hip-hop.
