History
Choir R&B gospel is the crossover current where the choir met urban contemporary production, pioneered by Kirk Franklin, whose God's Property project fused a young-adult choir with hip-hop and R&B on the multi-platinum 'Stomp' (1997). Fred Hammond's Radical for Christ, Hezekiah Walker's Love Fellowship Crusade Choir and Donald Lawrence's Tri-City Singers layered R&B and funk beneath their choirs, while Tye Tribbett & G.A. brought a live-band, groove-driven intensity in the 2000s. VaShawn Mitchell and Charles Jenkins continued the radio-friendly choir sound, cementing a style that keeps the ensemble tradition central while chasing contemporary grooves; it is cross-listed with the Gospel Soul / R&B Gospel family.
