History
Drawn directly from the Black church choir tradition, this approach surfaced when gospel-trained singers carried choir voicings into pop-soul. The Edwin Hawkins Singers' crossover smash signaled the bridge; later R&B acts and producers staged choir-sized backgrounds and call-and-response on secular hits, keeping the sound alive into the 2000s and beyond.
