Chillwave is hazy bedroom pop and electronic nostalgia built from smeared synths, soft drum machines, faded vocals, cassette-like texture, and washed-out summer melancholy. It sounds intentionally blurred, as if synthpop, Balearic pop, and indie R&B were remembered through old VHS color. Compared with downtempo, it is more song-based and indie-facing; compared with synthwave, it is softer and less cinematic.

History

Chillwave emerged from late-2000s blogs and home-recording culture, with Washed Out, Toro y Moi, Neon Indian, Memory Tapes, Small Black, and Millionyoung becoming early reference points. The style overlapped with hypnagogic pop, glo-fi, beachy indie, and the first wave of Tumblr-era nostalgia aesthetics. Its initial critical moment faded quickly, but its palette fed vaporwave, bedroom pop, lo-fi playlists, indie electronic, and dream-pop production throughout the 2010s.
