Chillstep
Located in 1 route
Chillstep is the softer, downtempo-facing side of melodic dubstep: airy pads, gentle half-time drums, wistful piano, liquid vocal chops, and rounded bass drops that soothe rather than attack. It often sits around 135–145 BPM but feels spacious and weightless, built for headphones, study playlists, and late-night emotional release.
History
Chillstep developed as dubstep's mainstream rise created demand for atmospheric, less aggressive bass music, especially on YouTube channels, gaming videos, and early streaming playlists. Blackmill, CMA, Phaeleh, Mt Eden, MitiS, Seven Lions, Crywolf, Direct, Sizzlebird, and Skrux helped define a sound that merged chillout, post-rock ambience, future garage, and melodic dubstep. It influenced melodic bass, future bass, emotional EDM, and the playlist-era idea of bass music as comfort music.
