Chicago Shuffle combines city-electric blues instrumentation with a skipping, swung beat that feels both danceable and gritty. Guitar, harp, and piano lock around rolling triplets, making the music more propulsive than slow blues but heavier than jump blues.

History

Shuffle rhythm became a standard Chicago club engine because it worked for dancers, drinkers, and bands that needed a groove to sit in all night. Jimmy Reed, Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Magic Sam, the Aces, and later revivalists such as the Nick Moss Band kept the form central to Chicago repertoire.
