Character dance translates stylized national or folk movement into ballet language, so the music foregrounds strong rhythmic profiles, colorful orchestration, and immediately recognizable dance idioms such as czardas, mazurka, tarantella, or Spanish-inflected numbers. It is theatrical, extroverted, and sharply contoured, often providing contrast within otherwise courtly or lyrical ballets.
History
The form emerged as 19th-century ballet increasingly used exotic and national tableaux inside divertissements and narrative scenes, especially in French and Russian repertory; Minkus, Tchaikovsky, Delibes, Drigo, and later Glazunov built a durable stock of “national” dance types that remains central to classical ballet staging, rehearsal, and pedagogy.
