Indie songwriting scaled up to a small ensemble: live strings, horns, vibraphone, glockenspiel and woodwinds replacing rock's guitar-bass-drums. Intimate, hand-played and warm rather than orchestral-grand. Arrangements are intricate and acoustic, the writing detailed and tender — sad, literate pop with the texture of a string quartet rehearsal.
History
Emerged in the mid-'90s as a deliberate reaction to lo-fi grunge, with Belle and Sebastian, The High Llamas and Eric Matthews reviving '60s orchestration on indie budgets. Sufjan Stevens, Beirut, Andrew Bird and Camera Obscura broadened it through the 2000s, making chamber arrangement a defining indie aesthetic.
