The radio-format heart of Contemporary Christian Music: midtempo-to-upbeat pop singles built for Christian Hit Radio. Smooth, compressed production, soaring mid-song key changes, faith-affirming lyrics and a polished, adult-leaning vocal sheen, structured around album cycles, Dove Awards and a tightly programmed AC/CHR airplay ecosystem.

History

CCM crystallized as an industry term and Billboard chart category through the 1990s, anchored by Nashville labels and K-LOVE-style radio. Acts like Steven Curtis Chapman, Casting Crowns and MercyMe dominated 2000s airplay; MercyMe's I Can Only Imagine (2001) became a defining crossover that later spawned a 2018 biopic. A 2013 wave (Overcomer, Hello My Name Is) extended its reach.
