History
The repertoire grew through papal, cathedral, monastic, and court institutions, especially in Italy, Spain, France, Austria, and southern German lands, and remained one of the main engines of Western compositional development from Palestrina and Victoria to Mozart, Bruckner, Duruflé, Poulenc, and beyond; it continues both as liturgy and concert tradition.
