Cantopop is Cantonese-language pop centered on Hong Kong's recording, film and television industries: dramatic ballads, polished synth-pop, karaoke standards, star personas, TV themes and emotional melodies shaped by a dense media ecosystem. It is inseparable from celebrity culture, cinema and language identity. The best-known songs feel both intimate and public, built for headphones, concert halls and mass singalong memory.
History
Sam Hui helped make Cantonese pop dominant in Hong Kong, replacing earlier Mandarin and English-language habits. The 1980s and 1990s golden age produced stars such as Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, Alan Tam, Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Beyond and Faye Wong. After 1997, market shifts and Mandopop's rise changed the industry, but Cantopop remains culturally central through karaoke, concerts, film nostalgia and newer Hong Kong artists.
