Cambodian Rock is the electrified pop-rock, surf, garage, psychedelic and soul-influenced music of 1960s and early 1970s Cambodia. It mixes Khmer melody, film-song drama, organ, guitar fuzz, Latin and French pop traces, go-go rhythm and powerful vocal personality. The music is bright and stylish, but it carries historical weight because many artists were killed or disappeared during the Khmer Rouge era.

History

Phnom Penh's recording, radio and film industries created a cosmopolitan music scene before 1975. Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron, Yol Aularong and bands such as Baksey Cham Krong adapted Western rock and regional pop into Khmer-language hits. After war and genocide destroyed much of the scene, cassette circulation, collectors, documentaries and bands such as Dengue Fever helped bring the music to international attention.
