Cabaret standards are songs repeatedly favored by cabaret performers because they reward textual nuance, emotional pivoting, and intimate storytelling. They often overlap with the Songbook, but the deciding feature is interpretive flexibility in a room-sized setting rather than compositional origin alone.
History
This repertory was stabilized by recurring use in clubs, recitals, and supper rooms, where certain songs proved especially useful for irony, confession, wit, or late-night ache; performers such as Mabel Mercer, Bobby Short, Julie Wilson, Andrea Marcovicci, Karen Akers, and Michael Feinstein treated these pieces as shared tools of the trade.
