Bubblegum Pop

Deliberately simple, sugary pop engineered for children and teens: nursery-rhyme melodies, nonsense or candy-food lyrics, chugging four-on-the-floor beats, handclaps, and bright session-musician arrangements. Often credited to fictional or cartoon acts, it prizes instant catchiness and innocence over depth, with hooks repeated until they lodge permanently.
History
Coined by producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jeffry Katz, bubblegum is traced to 1968 hits by the 1910 Fruitgum Company and Ohio Express on Buddah Records. The Archies' 1969 cartoon-band smash 'Sugar, Sugar,' assembled by Don Kirshner with singer Ron Dante, became the year's best-seller and defined the style, which echoed into later teen-pop confections.
