New York's drill takes the UK's crisp, bouncing template and adds gravel-voiced, gang-anthem energy. Sliding 808s glide under skittering hi-hats and a snare that lands late, while ominous bell, brass or string stabs loop over wide-open space. Deeper, raspier vocals and call-and-response ad-libs make it more rowdy and party-ready than Chicago's flat menace.

History

Sparked in 2017 when Flatbush's 22Gz dropped 'Suburban' and Sheff G answered with 'No Suburban,' both over AXL Beats. UK producer 808Melo's beats then powered Pop Smoke's 2019 breakout 'Welcome to the Party' and 'Dior,' taking the sound mainstream. Fivio Foreign, Sleepy Hallow and Bizzy Banks expanded it before Pop Smoke's 2020 death.
