Broken Techno

Broken Techno is techno that interrupts the straight 4/4 grid with breakbeats, syncopated kick patterns, bass-music pressure, electro angles or IDM-style drum programming. It keeps techno's sound design and club weight, but the rhythm stutters, folds and pivots instead of marching. Tracks often feel percussive, low-lit and unstable, with bass pressure doing as much work as the kick drum. The tag is especially useful for music that DJs can mix with techno but that owes just as much to dubstep, UK funky, breaks, electro, jungle and experimental club music.
History
Broken techno grew from the overlap between UK bass mutations and international techno in the late 2000s. Labels and artists around Hessle Audio, Hemlock, Hinge Finger, Ilian Tape, The Trilogy Tapes and similar scenes treated techno as a flexible rhythmic shell rather than a fixed kick pattern. Objekt, Blawan, Pangaea, Boddika, Joy Orbison, Skee Mask and related producers made records that worked in techno sets while carrying post-dubstep swing, sound-system bass and intricate edits. The approach became a durable bridge between techno rooms and adventurous bass-music crowds.
