Broadway Pop

tagStarted 1996Peak 2015-2022Last big hit still active

Stage-musical songs written in a modern pop idiom rather than traditional showtune style: pop-rock chord changes, contemporary beats, hip-hop and R&B inflection, sung by belting Broadway voices. Cast-recording production is clean and dynamic, built for the theater but engineered to travel to streaming playlists and viral clips with hook-forward choruses.

History

Rent (1996) pushed rock-pop into book musicals; Wicked (2003) set the pop-belt anthem template. Lin-Manuel Miranda fused hip-hop and R&B into Broadway with In the Heights (2008) and Hamilton (2015), while Dear Evan Hansen (2016) and Sara Bareilles' Waitress brought confessional pop. Streaming and TikTok turned cast recordings into pop hits in their own right.
