The melodic, chiming wing of Britpop: ringing Rickenbacker and acoustic-electric guitars, Beatles-and-Byrds songcraft, sweet vocal harmonies, and warm major-key choruses. Less laddish bravado, more wistful pop sunshine and crisp '60s revivalism. Bright, hummable, and unfailingly tuneful, with a distinctly English melancholy under the gloss.
History
Sparked by Liverpool's the La's in the late '80s, the jangly strain of Britpop flowered mid-'90s through Teenage Fanclub's Big Star worship and bands like the Boo Radleys, the Bluetones, Cast, and Dodgy. It offered Britpop's melodic, harmony-rich alternative to swagger, scoring radio hits before the movement faded near decade's end.
