Mid-90s British guitar pop reasserting UK identity: Kinks-and-Beatles melodicism, mod and glam swagger, witty kitchen-sink lyrics in unapologetic regional accents, and big anthemic choruses. Bright, hook-laden and resolutely un-grunge, it traded American angst for Union Jack confidence, lager-lad attitude and singalong terrace-chant euphoria.
History
Coalescing around 1993-94 as a self-consciously British answer to American grunge, Britpop hit fever pitch with the 1995 Oasis-vs-Blur chart battle and the Cool Britannia media moment. Pulp and Suede rounded out the scene before Oasis's overblown third album and shifting tastes deflated it by 1998.
