Expansive, ambitious UK rock that grew past Britpop's parochialism: layered guitars, atmospheric production, falsetto and art-school experimentation, often shading toward melancholy and grandeur. History
Crystallised in the late 80s/early 90s as bands sought bigger canvases than indie's three chords. Radiohead's 1997 'OK Computer' redrew the map toward dread and texture; Muse and Coldplay carried the anthemic strain to global stadiums around 2000-2003, making British alternative one of the era's biggest rock exports.
